The United Nations Secretary-General is responsible for the investment of the assets of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). The Secretary-General has delegated this responsibility to the Representative of the Secretary-General for the investment of the assets of the UNJSPF (RSG). This position is in the Private Equities Section of the Office of Investment Management (OIM) of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). The incumbent will report to the Chief Investment Officer.

Duties & Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Director of private equities will be responsible for the following functions

  • Contributing to the Work Programme of the Office of Investment Management (OIM) by
    • Implement strategic strategies and strategies for the allocation of Private Market assets and other investments based on investment policy and strategy set by the Deputy Secretary-General and Chief Investment Officer (CIO), in consultation with the Investment Committee and the Pension Board recommendations.
    • Managing private market groups including Private Equity / Real Estates and real estate agents in pursuit of higher performance than appropriate benchmarks without unnecessary risks by ensuring adequate resources, appropriate investment strategies, and an adequate operating environment.
    • Recommends Private Market Investment Strategies and other investments as well as determining investments within the mandate of the Private Markets Investment Director.
    • Support the CIO in recommending investment policy and strategies to the Deputy Secretary-General.
    • Evaluate the advice and recommendations of investment advisers, industry experts and employees of the Unit.
    • Leading the implementation of the Private Sector Investment Policy and other investments.
    • Assessing the performance of investments in the Private Markets portfolio and other investments.
    • Recommends comprehensive guidelines for asset allocation, financing, and market rates, as well as short-term strategic and strategic allocations.
    • Supportive staff training and development programs to maintain and improve the knowledge of 10+ Unit personnel.
  • Assists the Representative of the Secretary-General for the Investments of the UNJSPF and the CIO to report on related matters to the Investments Committee, Pension Board, ACABQ and the Fifth Committee by
    • Preparing and overseeing the preparation of reports on investment performance, portfolio formulation, investment policies and strategies, global economic and market conditions, investment vision and funding needs activities.
    • Present and defend proposals regarding funding and hiring of Private Market employees and other investments in the Pension Board, ACABQ and the Fifth Committee and provide answers and explanations of questions raised by Governing Bodies.
  • Supports the CIO in consultation with investment advisors and external managers of the Fund and stated performance management.
  • Represents the Office of Financial Management at internal and external forums.
  • It performs other functions as required such as participating in a wide range of OIM projects including Inventory Credit Management Studies and Evaluation Courses.

Eligibility Criteria

Education

  • Advanced university degree or equivalent experience and sound knowledge of portfolio investment management and finance.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
  • Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 15 years of proven progressively responsible and practical experience in the management of investment of well-diversified Private Markets portfolios in large sized institutions is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in underwriting Private Equity and/or Real Estates funds is required.

Desired Experience

  • Experience in public pension funds is desirable.
  • Experience in managing global portfolios including emerging markets is desirable.
  • Experience in broader alternative investments including absolute return strategies is desirable.
  • Experience in financial institutions such as pension funds and endowment funds is desirable.

Required Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat.
  • For this position, fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
