Programme Management UNO Internships In New York 2022 The Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. As a global leader in security risk management principles, UNDSS enables the safe and effective delivery of United Nations programmes and activities in the most complex and challenging environments, while maximizing precious resources. To this end, the work of the Department is aligned under a clear mission, to enable United Nations system programme activities through trusted security leadership and solutions. This internship opportunity is located in the Physical Security Unit within UNDSS.

The internship is for a period of six months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days (35 hours) per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Duties & Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance and direct supervision of the Chief, Physical Security Unit, the intern will work in close collaboration with the members of the Physical Security Unit, ensuring timely support in carrying out normative work of the Team which includes the Unit’s transfer of online content to SharePoint online, production of PSU Webinars, as well as support of drafting of the project and informational materials.

The intern is expected to undertake the following duties:

  • Conduct research, compile information from different sources and assist with the preparation of background documents as requested;
  • Assist in preparing for meetings with partners;
  • Contribute to data entry, updating database and programme related documents;
  • Assist in editing and revision of reports, briefs, and other documents as needed;
  • Assist in drafting correspondence, talking points, reports and presentations.
  • Assist with preparation and dissemination of materials including meeting notes and reports;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Eligibility Criteria

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

  • The applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    1. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
    2. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Experience

  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.
  • Your training, education, advanced course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Fluency in French is an advantage

  • Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by an interview.
